My review:

I read a lot and I absolutely love a good paranormal thriller. The Dogs seemed like it would be a great fit especially with Halloweeen right around the corner. I was kindly provided this book in an E-ARC version from netgalley.com and Sourcebooks for review.

I think this would be a great book for someone who likes ghost stories, creepy houses, family dynamics, coming of age stories and books that show a lot of character growth.

Cameron, a boy who is constantly moving from Town to town while on the run with his mother from what appears to be an abusive situation with Camerin's father. The story follows their move to an isolated farmhouse with a story of its own. You start the story with Cameron looking out the window and seeing the face of a young boy.. He goes on to explore the house and the history of the place before he and his mom moved in. All this is going on while he is dealing with a new school, family problems, and he starts to believe that he might be going cray.

There is a good blend in this book of paranormal activities and real life drama which really provides a lot for all types of readers. Cameron has to go through a lot including bullying and mental illness as well as a whole variety of family issues. There are quite a few instance of paranormal activities to also keep readers who enjoy this aspect entertained.

I enjoyed the way the mystery wrapped up but it felt a little rushed for me. Also, I thought this read on the younger end of YA. I would recommend this for anyone who likes paranormal mixed with a level of growth and development of the main character. Definitely very enjoyable to read.

The Raven Boys: By Maggie Stiefvater

17675462

Book: The Raven Boys
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: Sept. 18th 2012

Description:

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

My Review:

Absolutely one of my favorite reads this year.

I have owned this book for about 2 years and I have been seeing it circulating again and decided to finally give it a chance. If this sounds anything like you, PICK IT UP NOW.

Seriously, these characters are magnificent. The relationship between the Raven Boys and Blue as well as Blue and her eclectic family is wonderful and endearing to read.

I loved everyone in their own ways and although they are so different they are definitely connected through a common goal and person. It is a bond that can only be formed by love, friendship, and an amazing supernatural element.

The writing and the language used was definitely detailed, enticing, and intriguing. The author sucks you in little by little and I actually felt like the plot developed slowly but that wasn't a turn off in this situation, it gave you time to marvel at the characters.

I also really appreciate the language used and was glad I read this on my Kindle so I could occasionally look up words I didn't know the definition to. I thought the word choice added to the characters who were using that language.

I am very much looking forward to continuing and can now see why everyone is always lusting after the next book in the series after an ending like that I don't blame people one bit.

Praise for The Dogs:

“Stratton masterfully constructs a creepy gothic setting…A monstrous, stalking father, unhinging nightmares, a ghostly boy, wild dogs, and a moldy basement add creepy deliciousness to a murder mystery and tale of a boy who, in trying to solve a mystery, may just discover what a loving family might be. An engrossing blend of murder mystery and family story.” –Kirkus STARRED Review
"There’s fear aplenty in Allan Stratton’s The Dogs and a tantalizingly uncertain element of the supernatural… refreshingly like an old-fashioned mystery, but the passion and terror underlying (our hero's) own family give it emotional complexity and suspense." - Toronto Star
“A real page-turner... [The Dogs] stayed with me for days, author Allan Stratton having created an unsettled aura the likes of which Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King routinely built into their work, too... Stratton’s depiction of setting and characters is masterful, and his ability to create tension and keep readers on edge is equally strong.” – Montreal Gazette
“A chilling tale of a mother and son on the run, from the author of the award-winning Chanda’s Secrets…Written in accessible prose, The Dogsmanages to thrill while exploring the mindset of the victim in ways that are both insightful and affecting, artfully portraying permanent state of dread and a creeping self-doubt. This is an accomplished, gripping and thoughtful story, whose dramatic ending delivers on every level.” –The Guardian
“Brilliant, page-turning, and eerie. Had me guessing to the very end.” –Joseph Delaney, author of The Last Apprentice series.
“An Agatha Christie mystery novel on cocaine” –SLJ Teen Newsletter

Excerpt from The Dogs:
I
go up to my bedroom. It’s at the top of the living-room stairs, next to a small bathroom and near the big room over the kitchen. That’s the room Mom thought I’d pick, and I would have, except for the trapdoor in the ceiling. It’s sealed up with nails and paint. When I saw it, I asked Mom what she thought was up there.
“An attic.”
“Yeah, but what’s in it?” I pictured a dried-up body, half eaten by mice. I mean, who seals up an empty attic? Anyway, that’s why I didn’t choose the big room. If I don’t see the hatch, it’s easier not to think about what’s on the other side.
The bedroom I picked came with an oak desk, a wooden chair, a night table with a lamp, and a metal-frame bed. The mattress is new, unlike the wallpaper, which is stained and peeling along the seams near the window. Under the peels are layers of older wallpaper, one with little orange canaries on it.
The window over my desk is the one good thing about my room. Looking out, I can see the barn with the fields all around and the woods in the distance. At night, the stars and the glow of the porch-lamp light up bits of the barn and the first row of cornstalks.
I start to do my homework. Pretty soon, though, I’m looking out the window, watching the stars come out and trying to forget my life. I wonder who all are staring up at the moon right now. Are they wondering the same thing?
Out of the corner of my eye, I catch something moving by the barn. When I look, it disappears. Wait. There it is again at the cornfield. Some movement, some thing.
I count to twenty. Nothing. I relax. Then—did that stalk move? I turn off my light so whatever’s out there can’t see in.
It’s probably just a breeze.
Or Mr. Sinclair. Or Cody and his gang.
Don’t be nuts. If it’s anything, it’s an animal. A coyote or a dog.
The dogs. I close my curtains. If I don’t look out, whatever’s there will go away. But I can’t not look. I sneak a peek. Nothing. Wait. By the barn. Is that a boy?
I blink. The boy is gone.
My eyes scan the barn. There’s a missing board up in the loft area. The more I stare, the more I think I see the boy staring back at me from the shadows behind the hole. He’s maybe ten, very pale, and he’s wearing one of those old Davy Crockett hats with the raccoon tail hanging from the back. Are those freckles on his cheeks?
Don’t be crazy. The barn’s too far away to see stuff like that.
The face disappears. I stare till I see double. The face swims back into view.
This is too weird. I close my eyes and try to clear my head by thinking about the bus and the Cheerios between Benjie’s teeth. When I open my eyes, everything’s normal. There’s no face. Nothing. Just the night.
And that’s how it stays.
I close my curtains, get ready for bed, and crawl under the covers. I hate the way I scare myself. It’s always the same and it’s always stupid. And the scared-er I get, the more I talk to myself, which is even stupider.
Besides, even if there was a boy in the barn, what’s scary about that? Maybe he just likes exploring places like I do. Still, it’s weird he’s on our property, especially so late. I wonder where he lives.
Who says he lives anywhere? Who says he’s real? What parents let a kid that young wander around at night?
Mom knocks on my door. “Cameron?”
“Yeah?”
“May I come in?”
“Sure.”
I know she wants to give me a good-night hug, but I told her to stop it when I was twelve, so she just stands in the doorway. “I know you didn’t mean anything. You’ve had a hard day. I’m sorry I overreacted.”
I hate it when she’s all understanding. It makes me feel like an even bigger jerk. “That’s okay. Mom, I really am sorry.”
“I know.” She pauses. “’Night, then. I love you.”
I want to say the l-word back, but I feel dumb, so I just say,
“You too.”
Mom closes the door. I go to turn off my lamp and get flashes of Mr. Sinclair and the dogs and the kid I maybe saw in the barn. What’s out there in the dark, circling the house when we’re asleep? What could be out there?
I leave the light on.

Comic Book Binge Read

My husband is stuck doing inventory for work this weekend so I will be at home just waiting for him to be done before we can go out and do anything fun.

That being said I decided to come up with a plan for my own fun.

I have numerous (around 10) comic books on NetGalley.com that I need to get reviewed, one being the conclusion to the Alex & Ada series I previously reviewed on here. I have read Vol 2 and just need to complete Vol 3 and am really looking forward to getting to this and finding out what the future holds for these two lovers.

Some of the other volumes I have are things a bit outside of my standard graphic novel comfort zone but that is what makes them so exciting.

I really only began reading comics/graphics this year and I was completely taken aback by how engrossing and visually satisfying they can be.

Plus they have a lot of humor that just really resonates with me as a reader and I just did not expect that at all.

Really looking forward to sharing my thoughts and feelings as I dive into these comics.

If you don't know what netgalley.com is, it is actually a site were publishers can approve reviewers to review upcoming releases or previously released items that might have a sequel coming out soon etc to help build hype around the new release and make it more known.

I have been a member for a few years now but only actively reviewing for about a year and I love it.

I have had so many opportunities to discuss upcoming releases and work with publishers to promote new books coming out and even host giveaways. I actually have a review coming soon that has a giveaway associated with a new release.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson Review

19351043

Book: Nimona
Author: Noelle Stevenson
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date: May 12, 2015

Description:

The graphic novel debut from rising star Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it "a deadpan epic."

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

My Review:

What a great story full of fun and life lessons.

As illustrated a hundred times over Noelle Stevenson can do no wrong in my book.

If this colorful and story rich graphic novel were anymore perfect I wouldn't know what to do.

The story is about a hero and a villain and a villain's sidekick who swoops in and shakes things up.

Hero: Goldenloin
Villain: Ballister Blackheart
Sidekick: Nimona

The hero and villain were both training to be the kingdom's champion and after a fierce joust the man who would become the villain lost his arm and turned to a life of crime.

He blamed the hero for his turn to crime as he is the one who caused the injury.

Throughout the story you see the duality of good and evil and how what appears on the surface might not really be what is going on inside a person.

Ballister shows love and compassion for Nimona as well as loyalty. He also feels loyal to Goldenloin as they shared a bond and friendship when training to be Champion.

You don't see the villain intentionally trying to bring physical harm to anyone, in fact, when Nimona suggests it he tells her not to and doesn't want to be that type of super villain. I could see the good in him from the start which is what made his role as the "villain" so dynamic and interesting.

As we delve into Goldenloin's past and even some in his present we see some things that would make many people believe he could be the villain. He is willing to kill a girl, has lied and cheated and is willing to do bad things if it means he will look good; all characteristics of a "bad guy."

I think that is the main thing that is accomplished by this story. It is an illustration of human nature and really shows that not one person is inherently good or evil. There are two sides to every person and most people fall somewhere in-between.

There was loyalty, hijinxs and lots of laughs but also some really heartfelt and serious moments that gave the story and characters depth.

Wonderful job and can't wait to see more from this author.

They're Not Like Us: Black Holes for the Young Vol 1 Review

25275114

Thank you netgalley.com for allowing me to review this read in exchange for my honest opinion.

Book: They're Not Like Us: Vol 1 Black Holes for the Young
Author:  Eric Stephenson, Simon Gane, Jordie Bellaire
Publisher: Image Comics and Diamond Book Distributors
Publication Date: July 21, 2015

Description:

Eisner-nominated NOWHERE MEN writer ERIC STEPHENSON teams up with red-hot artist SIMON GANE for an all-new ongoing series! We all have advantages over one another, but what if you were capable of things most of us can only imagine? What would you do – and who would you be? A doctor? An athlete? A soldier? A hero? Everyone has to make a choice about how to use the abilities they're born with... but they're not like us.

Collects THEY'RE NOT LIKE US #1-6

My Review:

I received a digital E-Arc version from netgalley.com and Image comics in exchange for an honest review.

(I have since purchased a physical copy of this collection of the first 6 issues)

I didn't really know what to expect from this just reading the description but wit it having a well known author I decided to give it a chance.

I am very happy I did this.

The story has a lot of basic elements, young people get special abilities and are misunderstood by their family and friends; etc. Nothing really new there...but I think the direction the leader takes and the quick progression of the story add to the overall individuality of the plot line.

What begins as a suicide attempt our main character Syd is thrust into a new life of people with similar abilities to her own. At first she finds this both terrifying and exciting and is beginning to understand her gifts while also doubting the leadership of the new regime she falls under.

Strong female lead who questions authority and who stands up for what she believes.

One thing I didn't enjoy was the progression of Syd's ability to control her gifts. I didn't feel like that was really explored and it couldn't just have been the release of her violence and aggression so I felt that needed a little more exploration.

I think the decision the main character makes at the end will really set the story up to develop into something really interesting.

The art style wasn't my favorite and the colors were a bit muted but I did like the attention to detail and think it went nicely with the story.

Overall, I would recommend this series and am looking forward to where it is headed.

Alex + Ada Vol 1 Review

21823465

Book: Alex and Ada Vol 1
Authors: Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn
Publisher: Image Comics
Publication Date: June 16, 2014

Description:

From JONATHAN LUNA (GIRLS, THE SWORD, ULTRA, Spider-Woman: Origin) and SARAH VAUGHN (Sparkshooter) comes ALEX + ADA, a sci-fi drama set in the near future. The last thing in the world Alex wanted was an X5, the latest in realistic androids. But after Ada is dropped into his life, he discovers she is more than just a robot.

My Review:

I loved this.

I can not wait to continue. I was very impressed with the concept and storytelling and thought the idea was very much like the movie IRobot which I loved.

I think that the idea of having a robot living with you and doing anything you need while looking and feeling human is a bit scary but I think it is pretty amazing that our main character also wants this robot to have its own thoughts and opinions.

To have a robot be almost human can kind of cloud the right and wrong of loving or befriending them as they are not really "real" but can have human emotions. It is definitely a gray area and would be difficult to navigate in this near future story.

I liked where this is headed. I think the problem that some people have with the art style is kind of silly. It is a bit plain and the colors are muted and not the most vibrant but I think it flows well with the story telling.

I was approved to read volume 3 on netgalley so I am working my way to it in order to find out if this series just keeps getting better like I think it will.
