That's right, you asked for it, you got it, it's SQUIRREL GIRL! (She's also starting college this semester.) It's the start of a brand-new set of adventures starring the nuttiest and most upbeat super hero in the world!

COLLECTING: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1-4, Marvel Super-Heroes (1990) #8.

My Review:

Taking the opportunity today to talk about my newest Marvel hero, Squirrel Girl.

I will admit to being pretty skeptical of a girl with squirrel powers being anything I would want to read about.

She sounded pretty lame and I wasn't sure about what her powers would mean.

Basically, she has part squirrel blood so she can do similar things to squirrel's but a little more advanced due to her size. So running quickly, talking to squirrels, walking on power lines, increased stregth and stealth, etc all fall into her list of powers.

She has basically be hiding away in the Avengers attic and decides to head off to college and forge a future for her self with her sidekick Tippy Toe in tow.

At college all she wants to do is fit in and make friends. She basically gets assigned a pretty liberal roommate who is pretty dynamic as a character on her own. She also almost instantly finds a cute crush.

The characters are diverse and energetic. The inclusion of Iron Man and Deadpool is incredibly fun and the story is lighthearted and not afraid to poke fun of itself.

It reminds me a lot of the Marvel Now run of Ms. Marvel that is still going on but that I have been following since the beginning.

If you want a genuinely fun comic with great characters and a unique concept then I would definitely give this ago. I love the portrayal of this new generation of super-girls who have their own style and geek factor to them.

What positive role models Marvel is providing to young girls everywhere.

5 out of 5

The Reckoners Series by Brandon Sanderson Review

15704486

Title: Calamity
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Publication Date: February 16, 2016

Description and Review:

I don't want to go to much into the plot for this book as it is the third in the series. I want to talk about the series as a whole.

First, this is the only series by Sanderson I have ever read. I plan to remedy that in the immediate future especially after reading this series.

I wish that right now I could just spill every single thought I had when reading this conclusion but that would be unfair to those who haven't had the chance to really experience the story.

The first book in the series description:

Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart — the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning — and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.

That is basically it. We have a series of humans who have obtained super powers through a cosmic event. Unlike the super heroes we are used to the humans who absorbed these powers were overwhelmed by them and turned evil causing them to rain terror on everyone who is still normal and basically rule all the cities of the world or destroy them.

NOT FUN FOR ANYONE. (except the bad guys)

Anyways, there is a group of regular people who want to fight these super natural beings and David, our main character teams up with them and starts the journey to figuring out the problem of the "Epics."

That is what to take away from this. A group of ordinary people stand up for what is right and try to overthrow the bad guys.

It also has a very cool element that feels almost comic book-esque which I think could be really enjoyable for fan of comics who wants a way to transition into reading full length novels or to diving into Sanderson's work.

But what this description doesn't mention is how fast paced, action packed, and basically badass this series is and it doesn't stop for 3 books. That is 3 books of kick ass characters who develop and change and grow in a way that feels fluid and in tune with the world.

It also means that we have 3 books to peel back the layers of this amazing universe that Sanderson has created. And from what I know about Sanderson, that is his whole thing. Amazing world building.

I think the characters evolve, the world evolves, and the story never misses a step. It just keeps getting better as the books continue.

If you like a book about a good anti-hero or good vs. evil with some awesome dry wit and humor then pick up this book series. Because the series is complete it would be no wait between books and because the series is considered YA, it reads very quickly.

I would stop what you are doing and pick this book series up now.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North Review

18295861

Title: The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August
Author: Claire North
Publisher: Redhook
Publication Date: April 8, 2014

Description:

No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes.

Until now.

As Harry nears the end of his eleventh life, a little girl appears at his bedside. ‘I nearly missed you, Doctor August,’ she says. ‘I need to send a message.’

This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

Review:

I have some pretty conflicting thoughts about this read.

First, let me say that is gets better. The first half reads like a bit of an information dump. Just so much description and history that it can prove a bit tedious to get through at first but just stick around for the second half because it definitely gets better; in fact it gets awesome.

Harry August has the ability to go through an entire life time, die, and be reborn over and over again. This is an account of his first 15 lives and the relationships he has formed and continues to form throughout his existence.

At one point he meets a man who has lofty ambitions to use technology he acquires throughout his lives, as he has the same abilities as Harry, to build a machine that will basically give him a God like view of the world.

This book is both about Harry's friendship with this man and his duty to stop him as his invention is causing the Earth to be destroyed faster and faster each life they live through.

This is part historical fiction, part science fiction, has spy elements to it, but it is ultimately a story of friendships and vengeance.

I was very impressed by the writing style. It was detailed yet concise and had a great element of information and emotion that tied in together.

I would be interested to read more by this author in the future. Claire North has a great literary voice and I would definitely recommend this read.

Friday Reads: 02/19/2016

Friday Reads

Well, another week has come and gone and we are headed into the weekend.

I am headed on a little road trip to the great state of Oklahoma to visit my family and haven't successfully finished a book all week (I know, I know) so I thought I would fill everyone in on what I have been reading. Just in case anyone is interested.

First, I have really made some progress on The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. This is a short YA fantasy novel about a thief having to steal a stone of immortality.

It was first publisher in the late 90's but saw it on amazon.com for like .99 or 1.99 for the ebook and had heard good things so I am giving it a try. Currently I am about 60% complete but it is a fairly slow day at work so I might try to attack the last 40% this afternoon.

I began my week reading, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. I have heard great things about this and heard it was a more modern day Pride and Prejudice (which I have still never read) so I thought I would give it a try. I am about 80 pages in and am really loving it so far.

The narrator is a young girl who is witty and naive and it is a lot of fun with some great elements of family dynamics up to this point. Hopefully it continues to be a fun read.

I have also been working on an audio book for way longer than I would like to admit.

I usually try to wrap an audio book up every week to two weeks but this one I took a break from as it was a little bit of information overload at the beginning but once you get to the second half it really picks up and it is actually pretty awesome. I am really enjoying this.

I love the time line and the god complex of our villain. Very entertaining and I only have about 2 hrs left so hopefully if not this weekend then the first of next week.

Last and most important, Calamity by Brandon Sanderson came out this week!!!

I have loved The Reckoners series from the beginning and am excited to wrap up this trilogy. These are the only Sanderson books I have ever read but I love them and plan to start the Mistborn series sometime this year.

This series of books are about a catastrophic event that leads to a percentage of the earths population developing super powers and most of these people who receive these gifts decide to use them for personal gain as opposed to helping people.

Fun twist with a great, incredibly quirky main character whose father died at the hand of one of these super humans who are called Epics.

Light romance, lots of action, and such great writing and characterization that I put everything else aside this week and focused on this. However, I have been incredibly busy this week and haven't made the dent I had wanted to on this so it will be my road trip book.

I need to finish it soon because my husband also wants to read it and we kind fought over who got to read it first so I want to get done quickly so he doesn't have to wait too long.

4 Upcoming April Children's Books: Which Should You Read

26527375

Title: Do Princesses Boogie?
Author: Carmela LaVigna Coyle

Illustrated by: Mike Gordon
Publisher: Rowan & Littlefield/ Taylor Trade
Publication Date: April 1, 2016

I was excited to find out that there is a whole series by this author after reading this incredibly fun children's book.

I think was a fun look at attitudes toward standard girl roles and that it was presented in a way that will empower young girls to know that they can do anything anyone else can.

Other titles in this series include "Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?" and "Do Princesses Scrape Their Knees?"

What an excellent thing to present to growing girls that helps instill confidence in them and allow them to think they can be both beautiful and strong.

Great message and 5 out of 5!

Title: Manner Are Not For Monkeys
Author: Heather Tekavec
Illustrated by: David Huyck
Publisher: Kids Can Press
Publication Date: April 1, 2016

Well this was very cute. A fun little story about manners and why they are important.

I think the illustrations are fun and capture the attention and the story is simple but the message is there.

However, I didn't really feel like their was anything to unique about it and really any book about manners has a similar plot and message.

It was fun though.

Title: Life Without Nico
Author: Andrea Maturana

Illustrated by: Fransico Javier Olea
Publisher: Kids Can Press
Publication Date: April 5, 2016

I think this was a great story about what it is like when someone close to you has to leave. The art is simple but expressive and I think it is exactly what story needed.

As a young girl deals with the loss of a friend and his return there is a teachable moment here. Even though sometimes people have to leave our lives for one reason or another the bond you shared can last a lifetime.

Would be great for a child whose friend might move away soon or even any child who has difficulty understanding why someone can't always be around.

Title: Outdoor Math
Author: Emma Adbage
Publisher: Kids Can Press
Publication Date: April 5, 2016

Another book that I think will be a great upcoming release is this great math activity book focused on enjoying the subject outside.

Not only does this book encourage children to get out and experience nature but it also has fun and education activities to accompany the typical playing outside.

I thought it was full of great interactive ideas and I think it would be great in a classroom setting or even at home to break up the sometimes bad image of doing math.

This adds a fun element any child would enjoy.

Valentine's Reads: A Read For Everyone

A Valentines Read For Everyone

Romantic Love:

9754815

If you are looking for something to put you in the mood for romance than definitely pick this up or anything by Stephanie Perkins. The Anna and The French Kiss companion series if comprised of 3 books following 3 different couples as they navigate first loves.

All the stories take place in a different location  but tie together. You can technically read them in any order but personally I suggest publication order.

If you like books with romantic settings, realistic romances, and personal growth and you love happy endings then I would pick up this love fest on V-Day.

Love Yourself:

18304322

What wonderful things have not been said about this great contemporary novel that came out in 2015. It follows a plus size girl as she struggles with loss, friendship, and self acceptance.

As our main character navigates through her spontaneous entry into her towns most popular event, a teen beauty pageant, while dealing with her first relationship, the growing pains of friendship, the death of a loved one, and her own self confidence and love for herself.

I loved that this was more about self-love and friendship than it was about high school romance so if you are looking for something not saturated in red and pink hearts I would pick this up and think about the love you have for who you are this Valentines Day.

Steamy Read:

16096824

If this Valentines you are looking for something a little more on the sexy side I would pick up Sarah J Maas first book in her new new adult/YA series.

What begins as a "Beauty and the Beast" retelling with fairies turns into a pretty steamy love affair with quite a bit of action of all types to keep you entertained.

Definitely wouldn't consider this smutty but a little sexier than you typical YA and a whole lot of fun to read. Also, very quick and stars a feisty main character who happens to be a female bad ass. No one writes female bad asses quite like Maas.

Understanding Romance:

23453112

If you are looking for a read that is a little nontraditional I would pick up this amazing piece of nonfiction by Aziz Ansari. I actually listened to the audio book for this and would definitely suggest picking it up in that format.

I know that I personally expected this to be similar to other celebrity books I had read in the past that were full of anecdotal information about the stars life and lessons they learned, etc. But this was definitely anything but that.

Aziz decided that he wanted to know how dating rituals had changed over the years and how dating and relationships were formed in a decades and even different countries.

He does quite a bit of research in Japan which I thought was so amazing. Not only does he talk about things like texting, and dates, but he even approaches topics like masturbation and sex with maturity and not with gory details.

I felt like he was raw and honest and had a professor and the research to back up his finding. Definitely one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read.

Conclusion:

If you are in a relationship or still looking for love pick up a good book and learn a little more about the subject. Happy Reading!

Praise for The Truth

"Such a fast-paced read!  What really happened that night? The truth will leave you gasping.” - April Henry, New York Times bestselling author of Girl, Stolenand The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die

Summary:

“I tied you up because I need you to listen,” Derek says. “Focus.”

“Please…  W-what do you want from me?”

“The truth,” he says.  “About what happened the night my brother died.” He reaches for my left hand. “If I think you’re lying…” With his other hand, he flourishes a pair of flower cutters. Curved. Sharp.

And he smiles.

When Chris wakes up in a dark basement tied to a chair, he knows that he’s trapped—and why. Eight nights ago a burglar broke into Chris’ home. Eight nights ago Chris did what he had to do to protect his family. And eight nights ago a 13-year-old runaway bled to death on his kitchen floor.

Now Derek wants the truth about what happened that night. He wants proof his little brother didn’t deserve to die. For every lie Chris tells, he will lose a finger. But telling the truth is far more dangerous…

A riveting, edge-of-your-seat thriller from Edgar Award-nominated author Jeffry W. Johnston that explores the gray area between what is right and what we’ll do to protect the people we love.

Excerpt from The Truth:
I wake up to find I cant move, my arms and legs duct-taped tight to a wooden chair.  Duct tape is also wrapped around my chest and the chair’s hard, unyielding back.
The only thing not bound is my head, but I can only turn it left and right.  I can’t look behind me because of the chair’s high back.
Christ, what is this!
My head hurts.  I feel nauseous, dizzy.  Can’t focus.  What happened?  How did I get here?  My memory’s a blur.
“Hey!” I shout.  “Hey!  Anybody here?”
I wait a few seconds.  Nothing.
I see unfinished walls, but I could be in a room anywhere.  The only furniture I can see is a metal folding chair leaning against the wall opposite.
Wait a minute!  What about Devon!  The last thing I remember was calling on my cell phone to make sure he got to the field OK.  What time is it?  Is he in the middle of his game, wondering where I am?  Is Mom there, wondering the same thing?
I can tell my cell is not in my pocket, not that I’d be able to reach it anyway. Where is it?  How long have I been out?  A couple hours?  A whole day?  Is it still …what, Saturday?  Are people looking for me?  The police?
“Hey!” I shout again.  “Heeeyyyy!”  I try harder to break free.  “Is somebody here?  Can somebody help me?  Please!  Please…!”
Who could have done this to me?  Why?
            “Help!  Help me!  Heeelllp…
This isn’t working.  I need to calm down and try to think.  Come on; breathe.  That’s it.  Again.  OK, now another breath.  My heart is starting to slow a bit.  That’s good.  Maybe closing my eyes will help.
Two more deep breaths.  Okay.  Now, think.
I remember dialing my cell.  But before that. I had knocked on Rita’s front door.  We were going to go to Devon’s game together.  I was waiting for her to open the door.  Wait, the door did start to open.  Then … nothing.  Or … something.  Something made me pass out.  Something with a sweet smell.  Held against my face.  Making me gag.  Feel sick.  I couldn’t push it away.  Something very strong was holding it in place.
Not some thing.  Some one.
I hear movement.  Behind me.  A door opening.  I try to look back; can’t.
The door closes.  A quiet click.
            Then footsteps.  Steady, determined.
I recognize the guy who appears in front of me.  Derek Brannick. Only a year older than me, which makes him seventeen, but with the broken front teeth and scar on his throat he looks much older.
He’s holding something in his hand, which he slips into his pants pocket before I can see it.  Then he picks up the metal chair from against the wall and opens it before straddling it and leaning over the back, facing me.  He lowers his head.  Does nothing for a couple minutes.  My heart slams against my chest.  I wait.  So scared I can’t think straight.
Finally, he raises his head and looks at me.  His eyes… It’s as if there’s no light in them.  Nothing.  Dead eyes.
“You want some water?”  His voice is raspy.  He stands and moves out of my field of vision.  I hear a faucet turning on and off.  Then he’s back with a paper cup.  “Tilt your head back,” he says.  I do the best I can.  Some of the water runs down my chin but enough makes it into my mouth.  The water’s lukewarm, but I welcome it.
“Feel better?  Can you talk?  ’Cause you’re gonna need to be able to talk. ” He crumples the cup and throws it on the floor.
“Yes,” I croak.  “Th … thank you.”  My voice is trembling.  I can’t help it.
Derek nods, lets out another long breath as if he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, and sit back down in his chair, pulling it closer to me.
“I’m … I’m sorry,” I try.  “I’m really—”
“Shh,” he says sharply, pointing a finger at me.  “I told you before, Chris…I’m not looking for that.”
“I should have showed up at the—”
“Shhh!”
He begins to cough.  It sounds painful.  He starts to talk again, then stops. Maybe it’s painful to talk too.  The way his voice is all rough and raspy, it wouldn’t surprise me.
Derek tries again.  “I tied you up because I need you to listen,” he says. “Focus.  Think you can do that?”
“Please…  Wh … what do you want from me?”
“The truth,” he says.  “That’s all.”
He reaches for my left hand.  Tied the way I am, I can’t resist.  “I don’t want to hurt you if I don’t have to,” Derek says.  “But you need to know that I’m serious.  If I think you’re lying…” With his other hand, he pulls out what he had shoved into his pants pocket and shows it to me.
A pair of flower cutters.  Curved.  Sharp.
Slowly, even gently, he opens them and slides the little finger of my left hand in between the razor edges.
“One finger for each lie,” he says again, “Do you understand?”
Oh God!  Oh Jesus!  All at once, I’m sweating, my eyes stinging.
“Do you understand?” he asks again, voice unchanging, low key.
“Yes,” I croak.  My eyes remain riveted to the cutters, expecting them to move, to squeeze.
            “Chris.  Look at me.”
I look up into those dead eyes.
“I meant what I said.”  He stops to cough again; continues.  “I need to understand everything.  This,” he says, indicating the cutters lightly caressing my finger, “will help you to tell the truth.  That’s all I want.  Don’t tell me what you think I want to hear.  There’s no right or wrong answer.  There’s only the truth.  Do you understand?”
But I can’t tell him the truth.  Not the whole truth.
My eyes dart back to the cutters.
Abruptly, he squeezes them.  “Do you understand?”

If you took a few minutes out of your day to read the praise for this book and the brief excerpt listed below and you haven't already gone out and purchased this book, maybe my review can help.

I thought this was fantastic.

When Chris wakes up in a dark basement tied to a chair, he knows that he's trapped-and why. Eight nights ago a burglar broke into Chris' home. Eight nights ago Chris did what he had to do to protect his family. And eight nights ago a 13-year-old runaway bled to death on his kitchen floor. Now Derek wants the truth about what happened that night. He wants proof his little brother didn't deserve to die. For every lie Chris tells, he will lose a finger. But telling the truth is far more dangerous.

Armed with a pair of garden shears I was constantly restless and nervous for the time when Derek would finally use them to extract the truth about what happened that night. The book is told in a backwards order that leaves you questioning when the big twist/reveal will take place and basically stressing because it could be around any turn.

I couldn't stop reading this. I had to know and when I did finally find out what had happened I was genuinely shocked. The "then" and "now," "back" and "forth" structure could be a little distracting and hard to follow but it all wrapped up in a fantastic way.

If you enjoy lies, intrigue, suspense, murder stories, and just plain exciting story telling then you should definitely enter the giveaway and if you don't win pick this up from one of the links above. You will not regret it.
