Publisher: Image Comics
Publication Date: Oct 7, 2015

Description:

Eisner Award-nominated writer KELLY SUE DeCONNICK (PRETTY DEADLY, Captain Marvel) and VALENTINE DE LANDRO (X-Factor) present the premiere volume of BITCH PLANET, their critically acclaimed and deliciously vicious sci-fi satire. Think Margaret Atwood meets Inglourious Basterds. Discussion guide included.

In a future just a few years down the road in the wrong direction, a woman's failure to comply with her patriarchal overlords will result in exile to the meanest penal planet in the galaxy. When the newest crop of fresh femmes arrive, can they work together to stay alive or will hidden agendas, crooked guards, and the deadliest sport on (or off!) Earth take them to their maker?

Review:

Well, this is exactly what the description says...a near future in which if a female disobeys the males in her life she will be sent to an all female prison to live out the rest of her days. Nobody gets out, there is no going home.

I thought this was great. I had read a little from McConnick in her Captain Marvel run that is still currently going. I have only read the first trade but really enjoyed the story telling so I was excited to give this a try.

It was fantastic. Everything you wanted from a near future romp in space on a lonely planet for female inmates. Take everything you know about hard core prisons and replace it with all female inmates and this is what happens.

The characters are dynamic and there are already some bonds forming. I will have to dive more into the run to see who will be a favorite but I definitely enjoyed everything I have read so far.

If you like tv shows/ books about prisons or inmates with a slight sci-fi twist then you will enjoy this read. Lots of strong female characters to enjoy reading about also.

I would say that from the first 5 issues I will definitely be continuing on and following McConnick as her writing is fun and witty while not being overly complicated.

The art in this was great as well. Nothing to overly spectacular but definitely a great addition to the text.

My Star Rating:
4 out of 5
